The Orphans
"A father of the fatherless, and a judge of the widows, is God in his holy habitation" - Psalm 68:5
Today we will look at orphans, that is, those who are helpless, orphaned and destitute. In this century, we can see that orphanages and old age homes are increasing more than ever before. There are many who are destitute by birth and circumstance. The Holy Bible mentions orphans 44 times. Our God is seen as a father to the orphans.
When Russell Moore, author of the book "Adopted for Life," once entered an adoption centre for orphaned children, there was great silence. Not a single baby sleeping in a crib was crying. The babies are quiet in their cribs, not because they need anything, but because they had learned that no one would respond even if they cried. He calls us to come and see those helpless children.
In 2 Samuel 4:4, we read about Mephibosheth. He was the son of Jonathan, the son of Saul. He was lame and could not walk. King David supported Mephibosheth, who was abandoned by his mother and father. King David provided him with a good life, allowing him to live in his palace and eat with him daily. Look at David’s caring heart!
Beloved, our God loves to search out and search for people who are in need. And the apostle James writes in his letter, "Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit the orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world." Let us pray for the orphans around us. Let us help them as much as we can with compassion. May the Lord bless us.
