Disciple? Or Christian?

 

“And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple” - Luke 14:27

 

One cannot truly be a Christian merely by having a Christian name and not following Christ in daily life. In the same way, it is not enough to merely accept Christ as one’s personal Savior; Christ commands us to live as His disciples. That is why Jesus Himself explained to those who followed Him what it means to be His disciple. Jesus clearly said that if anyone who comes to Him and does not hate (that is, give second place to) his father, mother, wife, children, brothers, sisters, and even his own life, such a person cannot be His disciple. Not only that, but he also said that whoever does not carry his cross and follow him cannot be his disciple. It does not mean that we should hate others but that we should put God first above everyone else. The Christian life is not a life without problems. We have the Lord who leads us through the problems.

 

In the Gospel of John, Jesus’ disciple, he said, “In the world you will have tribulation, but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” We must take up the cross that He gives us daily and follow Him. If we endure suffering with Him, He leads us on the path of the cross so that we too may rule as He does. A servant is not greater than his master, but the one who knows the will of the master and does it will be considered a good servant. Not only that, but Jesus also said that no one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.

 

Therefore, let us examine ourselves. Are we nominal Christians? Or disciples? He has called us to be His disciples, and He has set us apart. We should love nothing more than Jesus. Before Jesus was taken from this world, He said to His disciples, “Go therefore into all the world and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.” May we also live as disciples and make disciples of others to fulfill His command! Amen.
