Pilate's Wife

 

“...Have thou nothing to do with that just man: for I have suffered many things this day in a dream because of him” - Matthew 27:19

 

Pilate's wife, learning about Jesus' trial, sends a message to her husband, Pilate, warning him not to let Jesus be wrongly judged. Pilate was appointed governor of Judea by the Roman Empire. Pilate realized that the Jews wanted Jesus to be sentenced to death out of jealousy. The reason for this was the things Pilate's wife had seen in a dream and the news she had heard about Jesus! This incident is mentioned only in Matthew.

 

Although the name of Pilate's wife is not mentioned in the Bible, it is traditionally believed that her name was Claudia Procula. It is said that she was a Jew who later converted to Christianity. The Greek Church has canonized her. Her dream troubled her greatly. While her husband was sitting on the judgment seat, she sent a message. Although this was unusual, the dream about Jesus prompted her to do this. Perhaps Claudia had seen Jesus in the streets. She had heard about his miracles. She may have shared about Jesus while talking to Pilate. But one thing is certain. Her dream was a divine revelation. Through it she knew that Jesus was righteous. Claudia played a very important role in the testimony of Jesus that he was righteous in his death on the cross. When she said that she suffered for Jesus in her dream, she must have also seen Jesus’s suffering in her dream. When she saw Jesus' suffering, she could not bear the grief.

 

Although Pilate's wife could not do anything in the crucifixion of Jesus, it is remarkable that a woman tried to free the innocent Jesus. Whether our testimony is accepted or rejected, let us live for the Lord Jesus like this person. If we suffer with him, we will also reign with him. (2 Tim. 2:12)\
