Let's Honour Our Parents

 

“Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee” - Ex. 20:12

 

When I was working as a cook, there was a young man who would bring me tea every day. He often complained about his parents. One day, I told him gently, “As a child of God, you should never speak ill of the parents God has given you. Instead, thank the Lord for them. Even if they cause you pain, God can change their hearts and make them loving. He didn’t take my words seriously. A few days later, I was shocked to hear that he had taken his own life. It deeply saddened me. Many children without parents experience so many hardships. They suffer without food to eat, without education, and without good clothes to wear. But I felt sorry that this young man did not know how to honour his parents, whom they had raised safely for 35 years. Are we making our parents happy? Or are we being careless? “He who curses his father and his mother, his lamp will be put out in the thick darkness” (Prov. 20:20).

 

One of Noah’s sons saw his father’s shortcomings and spoke mockingly to his brothers. This was a sin in the sight of the Lord. God cursed him. But Noah’s other son covered his father’s shortcomings. The Lord blessed him. We too should not curse our parents. We should honour them. We should not be the children who torment our parents by asking them to write off their property while they are alive. We should remember that in (Prov. 28:24) “He who robs his father and his mother and says, ‘It is not treachery’ is a companion to a man who destroys.” Even if our parents do not help us, the Lord will lift us up in due time. Let us be confident. "Even if my father and my mother forsake me, the Lord will take me up." (Psalm 27:10)

 

Dear children! Of the 10 commandments that the Lord has given us, only one commandment is associated with a blessing. Yes, honour your father and your mother, so that your days may be long on the earth. Yes, honour your parents and we wish you to live as a blessed generation on the earth.
