They will shine forever

“And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever” - Daniel 12:3

Dr. Ida Scudder once believed that India was not the right country for her, and that life in America and marrying into a wealthy family would give her a better future. But one day, she made a new decision—for the people of India. That decision was to become a doctor for Indians. Because of her loving service, the people of Vellore affectionately called her “Ida Aunty."

After her father's death in 1900, she took on the full responsibility of the medical work. She established the Schell Hospital and provided free medical service. She started the first training school for nurses. In 1918, she started the "Women's Medical College." From 1945 onwards, men were also admitted to the medical college. In 1952, Dr. Ida Sophia Scudder was selected as one of the five best doctors in the world. She saved people from cholera, leprosy, and plague that spread in Tamil Nadu. Although she never married and dedicated her life to the welfare of the people and completed her life's journey in 1960 at the age of 90, her fame and legacy continue to shine forever.

Even in the first century, during the time of the apostles, Barnabas shone like a star. In Acts 4:34–37, we read about Joseph, who was called Barnabas by the apostles, meaning “Son of Encouragement.” He sold a field he owned and brought the money and laid it at the apostles' feet. Saul, who later became Paul, wanted to join the group of disciples. But... When the disciples were afraid to accept Paul and did not trust him, it was Barnabas who took him in and brought him to the apostles. He worked alongside Paul and was the mentor who nurtured Paul. Barnabas was called "Jupiter" and Paul "Mercury." During the times when Barnabas and Paul, the apostles, worked together, Barnabas held the primary position. When Paul rejected Mark, Barnabas trained Mark and made him a suitable co-worker for Paul! Those who lived like Barnabas and Dr. Ida Scudder, and other wise people, will shine like stars for all eternity. Amen.
