Steadfast Faith
"But without faith it is impossible to please him:..." - Hebrews 11:6
Even the disciples who followed Jesus Christ and they were constantly by His side did not believe the news of His resurrection. Their faith was shaken. The disciples on the road to Emmaus did not recognize that the person walking and speaking with them was the risen Jesus. In other words, they did not believe the prophecies concerning the resurrection. Consequently, Jesus rebuked them, calling them "slow of heart" for failing to believe the Scriptures (Luke 24:25). When Mary Magdalene and the disciples from Emmaus announced that Jesus had risen, the other disciples did not believe them. Jesus rebuked them for their unbelief and hardness of heart; He also told Thomas, "Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed." For "faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen" (Hebrews 11:1).
Peter and the other disciples who were with him forgot their calling, backslid in their faith, and went back to fishing (John 21:3). These were men who had spent about three and a half years with Jesus who had heard His words foretelling His death and resurrection, and who had witnessed all the miracles He performed in raising the dead yet, during a time of crisis, their faith grew weak. However, to strengthen their faith, Jesus appeared to them a third time; He satisfied their hunger by providing bread and fish, granted them such an abundant catch that their nets nearly burst, and ensured that they recognized Him as Jesus.
Yet, unlike those mentioned above, there are indeed individuals recorded in the Scriptures who possessed a steadfast and unwavering faith. It is God's will that, by believing in the words and promises of Scripture, we live a victorious life in this world amidst our struggles and attain eternal life in the world to come. Daniel and his companions possessed just such a steadfast faith.
Dear children of God! Today, too, the Lord desires to strengthen your faith. May He who prayed to the Father that Peter's faith would not fail during a time of trial also help us to overcome our own unbelief. Amen.
