The Conclusion of the Matter

 

“Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter...” - Ecclesiastes 12:13

 

For any undertaking, it is essential that its outcome be glorious. Whether we read stories or watch damas, it is natural desire for us to know how it ends. Solomon is the biblical figure renowned throughout the world as the wisest of men. In Ecclesiastes 12:9, he records that he was indeed wise; he taught knowledge to the people, diligently sought out and examined matters, and compiled and wrote down many proverbs. In the following verse, he writes that because he sought to find fitting words, the Lord the Shepherd granted him sentences that were upright and truthful. Furthermore, he states that these sentences written under the inspiration of the wise Holy Spirit serve as goads to set us right, and as firmly driven nails to imprint truths deeply upon our minds. He also observes that although much research is undertaken and many books are published, excessive study is wearisome to the body.

 

Having stated this, King Solomon writing the ultimate conclusion of the matter as revealed to him by the Lord declares in Ecclesiastes 12:13: “Fear God and keep His commandments, for this is the whole duty of man.” Specifically, as written in Haggai 2:9: “The glory of this latter temple shall be greater than the glory of the former.”

 

Therefore, even if our beginnings are humble, we must daily petition the Lord to ensure that our end is glorious and complete. Many children of God have lived exemplary lives, bearing witness to their faith, only to subsequently fall into backsliding. Such a path is fraught with the peril of forfeiting the ultimate prize. Therefore, let us pray and prevail that the Holy Spirit may transform us who are like ordinary water into a "later wine" that is sweeter than the "former wine."
