The Sufferings of This Present Time
“For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us" - Romans 8:18
Once, an elderly man with a physical disability boarded a bus. Since there were no empty seats available, he remained standing during the journey. Observing this, a young man felt moved with compassion; he stood up and offered his seat to the elderly gentleman. The elderly man thanked him and sat down, saying, “Praise the Lord.!” Hearing this, the young man was astonished. He thought to himself, "Even while living with a physical disability, he still offers praise to the Lord?" He then asked the old man, "Grandpa, how are you able to praise the very God who has allowed you to remain in this condition?" The old man offered no verbal reply; instead, with a gentle smile, he took a Bible from his bag and began to read. After a short while, he turned to the young man and asked, "Son, you paid money to buy a ticket, yet here you are, standing throughout the journey. Does that not trouble you?" The young man smiled and replied, "Grandpa, the bus will reach the stand in just ten minutes. My home is right next to it. So, why should I feel troubled?" "Well said, son," the old man responded. "Because you are confident that you will reach home in ten minutes, standing here does not feel like a hardship to you. Just as you firmly believe that you are on your way home, I, too, firmly believe that once this earthly life is over, I will reach my heavenly home. Once you know that your final destination is a place of pure joy, how could there be any room for sorrow? Would it not be filled with praise instead?"
In his Epistle to the Romans, Paul states, "I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us." None of the hardships, sorrows, or sufferings we experience in this world are permanent; they will all pass away one day. However, only those sufferings endured for the sake of the Heavenly Father and His Kingdom will bring us true blessings.
Dear All! It is only natural for suffering to arise in this earthly life. Yet, it is equally certain that the Lord will deliver us from it. When we contemplate the glorious life that awaits us, is it not true that even the greatest of tribulations seem like mere dust?
