He Shapes Us

"…as the clay is in the potter's hand, so are ye in mine hand,…" - Jeremiah 18:6

Reshma went to a shop to buy a gift for her mother's birthday. None of the items in the shop appealed to her. Just then, she heard the sound of a voice speaking from within the shop. She followed the sound to its source. There, tucked away in a corner, stood a clay teacup. Gazing at the teacup, she remarked, "You are truly beautiful." The teacup replied, "At first, I was nothing more than a lump of clay. To transform me into what I am now, the potter put me through a series of difficult processes. It began to hurt terribly. I wept and pleaded, 'Please, let me go!' But he simply told me, 'Have a little patience.' He continued to shape me until I took on a perfect shape. Then, he fired me in the kiln. I screamed in agony, crying out, 'It burns! It burns!' Finally, he painted me with vibrant colours and placed me before a mirror. I looked absolutely stunning. I was filled with joy. The potter said, ‘You were once just clay. If I had not shaped you and put you through the fire, you would have remained useless. I went through all this effort to make you beautiful and useful’. Having heard this entire story, Reshma purchased the teacup to present as a gift to her mother, and along with it, she included a handwritten note citing Jeremiah 18:6.

The Lord said to Jeremiah, "Arise and go down to the potter's house; there I will give you My message." When Jeremiah arrived, he found the potter at work, shaping a vessel out of clay. Since the clay vessel he was moulding was spoiled in his hands, he reshaped it into another vessel, fashioning it as it seemed best to him. Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah, and the Lord revealed: "O house of Israel, can I not do with you just as this potter has done?"

Dear Friends, in our lives as well, we are the clay in the hands of Jesus the Divine Potter. He knows exactly how to mould us so that our future may be truly excellent. The path along which He leads us may, at times, be difficult, or even painful. Yet, all of this serves a single purpose: to shape us and to refine us so that we may shine like gold. There is but one thing required of us: simply to humble ourselves and surrender completely into His hands. He Himself will then mould our lives into something magnificent and exalt us.
