Repent

 

“…Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand…” - Matthew 3:2

 

Animals living in mountain forests sometimes leave their current place and rush toward higher grounds. This behaviour serves as a sign of warning of the coming danger of an earthquake. By doing so, they protect both themselves and their species. This action not only demonstrates their cautious nature but also reveals their intelligence and wisdom for immediate action. Even birds and tree-dwelling squirrels, upon spotting a predator, emit a distressed cry to sound an alarm. Hearing this sound, other birds look around with startled vigilance, identify the threat, and take measures to protect themselves. Thus, even creatures possessing only five senses recognize such warnings and preserve their lives.

 

In the Scriptures, specifically in the third chapter of the Gospel of Mark, John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness of Judea and preached: "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand." When he saw many people coming to him to receive baptism, he said: "Brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Therefore bear fruits worthy of repentance." As human beings, once we have become aware of the warnings found in the Scriptures, do we abandon our current ways, repent, and prepare ourselves? Or do we continue to travel carelessly down a perverse path? Now is the time to examine ourselves.

 

Dear children of God, in Proverbs 29:1, we find this solemn warning: "He who is often rebuked, and hardening his neck, will suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy." How, then, are our deeds? Let us examine ourselves, set our lives in order, and prepare ourselves, making ourselves worthy to go forth and meet Jesus at His coming.
