Haughtiness of Spirit
“Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall” - Proverbs 16:18
Shantha was a young girl who could sing very beautifully. She was praised by everyone for her melodious voice and for having won prizes in numerous music competitions. Punitha, on the other hand, had not won prizes in school competitions, but she had participated in church and Sunday school competitions and received awards there. Once, both Punitha and Shantha registered their names to participate in a state-level music competition organized by their school. Santha proudly told her friends, loud enough for Punitha to hear, "Just look at her voice; what qualifications does she have to participate in a singing competition?" She boasted arrogantly, "I am the one who will defeat Punitha and win the first prize of ₹10,000." Punitha, however, offered no reply; she simply walked away in silence. On the day of the competition, Punitha prayed and sang with God’s presence and peace in her heart; consequently, she won the first prize. With God, nothing is impossible. Shantha, on the other hand, did not receive even a consolation prize. She came to realize that God is the One who casts down the mighty from their thrones and exalts the humble.
In the Scriptures, we find the story of Uzziah, a King of Judah who ascended the throne at the age of sixteen. Because he did what was right in the sight of the Lord just as his father Amaziah had done the Lord exalted him. Having defeated the Philistines, Ammonites, Arabians, and Meunites, he received an abundance of tribute. He established numerous vineyards in both the valleys and the plains. He commanded a mighty army comprising 307,500 men who were trained and ready to wage war. But when King Uzziah became strong and successful, pride entered his heart and led to his downfall, even when the priests warned him, as he stood arrogantly at the altar of incense holding the censer, leprosy broke out on King Uzziah's forehead. They hurriedly expelled him. He who had been honoured as king for fifty-two years, was, in a single moment of pride, cast out of the temple and compelled to live in a separate house.
Dear children of God, "God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble" (1 Peter 5:5). A person's pride will bring him low, but the one who is humble in spirit will obtain honor. When we humble ourselves before the Lord, He will exalt us. Therefore, let us submit ourselves under His mighty hand, so that God may exalt us in due time. Humility precedes honour.
