Good Character

 

“For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth” - Ephesians 5:9

 

Charles Williams was the man who transformed Harvard University into a world-renowned institution. Born with a facial deformity, he was often shunned and rejected by his peers. He made numerous attempts to correct this physical defect, but each effort ended in failure. At that time, his mother told him, “We cannot fix this physical defect ourselves. Instead, receive strength from God and devote yourself to doing good works. Then, people will look past your face and focus on your deeds.” Charles took these words to heart; he read the Scriptures, prayed fervently, and empowered by God’s strength expanded his knowledge and intellect. At the age of 35, he became the President of Harvard University; serving with exceptional distinction, he transformed it into a premier educational institution. He went on to excel in various fields politics, business, social service, and spirituality.

 

We often put great effort and energy striving to improve our physical appearance. Yet, as we read in Proverbs 31:30: “Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised.” More important than our appearance are our actions and the legacy we leave behind. Even after we leave this world, people will remember our deeds rather than our looks. Our conduct and the words that go from our lips must serve as an example and inspiration to others. To achieve this, our character must undergo a transformation. For our character to be transformed, we must wait patiently upon the Lord and receive His divine strength. God Himself declares, “Apart from Me, you can do nothing.” He further promises, “If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you.” We must read the Scriptures and live in accordance with their teachings. We must love others and dedicate ourselves to performing good works. Indeed, we are incapable of performing truly good works unless God’s love is first poured out into our hearts. Let us draw near to God and live in obedience to His Word.

 

Many of us spend a great deal of time ensuring that our physical appearance is pleasing and it is nothing wrong with that. A good appearance is indeed necessary. However, there is nothing to take pride in regarding it. Our God is not One who evaluates us based on our outward appearance, or on the manner in which we conduct ourselves externally before others. What He looks at is our heart! When our heart is filled with good character, we will bear much fruit in our lives.
