To Avoid Being Judged

 

“For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged.” - 1 Corinthians 11:31

 

A statue of a beautiful woman stood at the edge of a town. A poor young girl, captivated by the statue's beauty, desired to groom herself to look just like it. Seeing how beautifully the statue's hair was styled, she would carefully comb her own hair every day using her broken comb. She washed and mended her dirty, tattered clothes and wore them neatly. Day by day, she continued to improve her appearance. As time passed, her appearance gradually became more attractive.

 

How do we judge or examine ourselves? In the above-mentioned scripture passage, the Pharisee exalts himself in prayer. But what does the Bible say? It states that those who measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves among themselves are not wise (2 Corinthians 10:12), and that it is not the one who commends himself who is approved, but the one whom the Lord commends (2 Corinthians 10:18). The tax collector, who honestly examined himself, recognized that he was a sinner, and pleaded for God's mercy, was the one praised by the Lord and declared righteous, not the Pharisee.

 

Dear all, let us not measure ourselves against others, thinking we are far better or more holy than they are. Every day, we must compare our character with Jesus’s love, patience, forgiving spirit, gentleness, holiness, and goodness; realizing how much we fall short, we should pray to the Lord from the depths of our hearts, "Transform me to be like You." The Holy Spirit will certainly help us. We will be transformed, both in the sight of God and man becoming spiritually beautiful. May God grant us the grace to grow ever more in holiness. Amen.
