Gentleness

“For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God” - James 1:20

“Dad, please wake up! Don't leave me!” cried Watson as he stood beside his father's lifeless body. Driven by greed, one of his father's friends had deceived the family and transferred all their property into his own name. When Watson's father discovered this betrayal, he was deeply heartbroken and died from a heart attack. Filled with anger and a desire for revenge, Watson murdered the man who had cheated his family. As a result, he was arrested and sentenced to prison. While in prison, Watson was consumed by a sense of guilt. Although the family of the man he had killed was in deep pain, they felt compassion for Watson and prayed for his transformation.

During this time, a missionary visited the prison to share the Gospel. That day, he spoke on James 1:20, explaining that if we harbour anger, we cannot accomplish anything worthwhile, for anger is destructive; it mars the image of God within us. He also taught and counselled them using the verse: "Be angry, and do not sin: do not let the sun go down on your wrath" (Ephesians 4:26). Watson, who had been listening quietly, realized his wrongdoing and asked Jesus for forgiveness. As he confessed his sins to the Lord and received the assurance of forgiveness, God's peace filled his heart. His face, once marked by fierce anger, became gentle. He began to rise early every day to sing hymns, read the Bible, and pray. He shared the Gospel with those in the prison. When Watson’s prison term ended, the family of the man who had cheated his father returned all the property that rightfully belonged to him. He thanked God. From then on, he always displayed a gentle spirit.

Dear friends reading this, human anger is futile. Whatever our problem may be, when we calmly present it to God, He will plead our cause and ensure justice is done for us. Be kind and compassionate to one another and forgive each other just as God forgave you in Christ. Let us remain calm and composed, avoiding anger in any situation. Let us entrust our lives into God's hands. Let Him reign over us.
