Jesus, the Rock
“And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ" - 1 Corinthians 10:4
A ship was sailing across the sea when a sudden storm damaged it. Many passengers were left struggling for their lives in the water. By a stroke of luck, a young boy was washed onto a rock. Two hours later, a rescue team arrived and saved him. When asked if he had been afraid, he replied, "Because I was standing on a solid rock, I felt confident that I would survive."
Similarly, in the Bible, when Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt toward the land of Canaan, they suffered because there was no water. The people argued with Moses and even attempted to stone him. Moses prayed to the Lord. The Lord told him, "I will stand before you there on the rock in Horeb; strike the rock, and water will come out of it for the people to drink." Moses did exactly as instructed in the presence of the elders of Israel, and the people drank the water. Writing about this, Paul states that they all drank from the spiritual Rock, and that Rock was Christ. Even today, Christ is the Rock who meets our needs. David referred to God as his Rock and his Fortress; consequently, though enemies pressed in on him, they could not overcome him. Even when Saul pursued him, God delivered and saved David. Later, as the Israelites continued their journey, they once again found themselves without water. At that moment, God instructed him to “speak” to the rock. However, angered by the people's grumbling, Moses struck the rock, relying on a past experience and water did flow out, but Moses lost the privilege of entering the Promised Land, for Christ was destined to be struck only once.
Christ—the Rock who came into the world, suffered, died, and rose again for us, is with us today to meet our needs. When we speak to Him, sharing our shortcomings, needs, hardships, and distress God transforms them. No matter how difficult the circumstances, it is an easy matter for Him to help us. Therefore, let us not fear our circumstances. As the Psalmist says, "I have set the Lord always before me; because He is at my right hand, I shall not be moved." He who promised to be with us always, even to the end of the age, is faithful to His word. He will be with us and guide us. So, hold firmly to Christ, the Rock.
