“The Lord or the Blessing?”
“…when he hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold.” - Job 23:10
A sister who shines powerfully in ministry once shared her testimony in a book. In the early days of her ministry, she clearly heard the Lord’s voice saying, “My daughter, let go of that person you love. I want to use you.” She was heartbroken; it felt as though He were asking for her very life. Yet, fully assured that the God who created and loved her would never do her harm, she began to distance herself from that person. Before long, God began to use her powerfully, and she became a blessing to many people.
In the Bible, God tested Abraham by asking him to offer Isaac, his son, his only son, whom he loved, as a burnt offering. Abraham set out to offer Isaac, the source of his joy, as a burnt offering to God on the altar. He did not tell Sarah. He even left the two servants who had accompanied him to Mount Moriah behind on the way, ensuring they would not hinder him. No earthly relationship stood in the way of the communion Abraham shared with God. As he prepared to sacrifice Isaac out of love and faith in God, the Angel of the Lord said, “Do not lay your hand on the lad, or do anything to him.” Furthermore, the Lord said to Abraham, “Because you have done this thing and have not withheld your son, your only son...” He said, "I will surely bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as the sand on the seashore." Because Abraham obeyed the Lord’s word, he received the promise: "Through your offspring, all nations on earth will be blessed."
Dear Friends, God tests us to set us apart in a special way. What does our heart cling to today? Is it God, or the blessings He has bestowed? Towards what are we journeying, God’s glory or worldly greatness? Abraham, who was once an ordinary man, is spoken of across generations as the "Father of Faith." If we turn away from the things God asks us to leave behind, He will surely bring honour to our name.
