Submission is goodness 

 

“His mother said to the servants, “Whatever He says to you, do it.” – John 2:5

 

An interview was held with the soldiers who were the survivors of World War II. In the interview they recalled how they spent one particular day and shared their experience. They said that on that day a certain soldier was hiding in a fox hole (a hole in the ground used by troops as shelter and firing point) and at times he fired the tanks of the enemies. Some soldiers enjoyed the day playing card games. Some other soldiers were firing guns. But all the soldiers strictly followed the order given to them by their commander. That day also went off just like the other days. Only later they came to know that they were involved in “Battle of the Bulge”. The effect of the war did not affect them because they did not know its significance and how it had changed the course of the war. But each one obeyed and carried out the commands and accomplished the tasks assigned to them perfectly. It brought them a tremendous victory. So, it is very clear that when we do our duties and fulfill our responsibilities properly, success is ours. 

 

In today’s scripture we learn about Ruth, the Moabitess. Ruth had lost her husband and what her mother-in-law Naomi suggested to her was not acceptable to Ruth. Inspite of it, she obeyed her words: I will do everything that you say. The reward of her submission was that she became a lineage of David and Jesus Christ, the savior of the world. 

 

Peter describes obedience as a precious adornment. He advises us to adorn ourselves with submission (1Peter 3: 1-5). But people are still hesitant to subject one to another. Obedience of soldiers at the battle field is very essential. Likewise, it is much needed to be submissive to one another in the spiritual warfare we encounter in our Christian life. When we try, to put this into practice, sometimes we may be discouraged and feel weary. But once we acquire the trait of submission with meekness, the reward will be a great blessing.
