Daughter of Jephthah 

 

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son…” - John 3:16

 

The very name Jephthah brings to our mind the vow he made. Chapter II of Judges is about Jephthah. He was a mighty man of valour. But he was driven out by his brothers who did not want him to share in their inheritance. But the same brothers went all the way to get Jephthah when they were in trouble. They made him the head and commander over them. He had to fight against the people of Ammon. Before going into battle, Jephthah made a vow to God that if the Lord gave him victory over Ammonites, he would make a burnt offering of the first thing he saw coming out of his house after the war. 

 

The Lord gave him victory in the war. When he came to his house, his only daughter came out to meet him with timbrels and dancing. On seeing his young daughter, he remembered his vow to the Lord and he began to wail. But his daughter was not moved by emotion. She had a balanced temperament. She stepped forward to sacrifice herself as a burnt offering to carry out her father’s vow with her. She was bold and willing to sacrifice herself as she loved her father dearly and she wanted her father to stay in peace by keeping his vow to the Lord.

 

Beloved, we always long to do something special for our dear ones whom we love deeply. In addition, we live in anticipation of receiving something nice from others. How great is the love of Jesus who sacrificed himself for us on the cross without expecting anything in return? How deep is the love of Jesus who is still interceding for us? Words fail to describe and express God’s love towards us. Let us understand the great love of Christ on the cross and be the witness to the love of Jesus in day-to-day life. Let us offer ourselves as living sacrifices and be the walking epistle of Christ.
