Where to stay safe and secure?
“When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him” - Matthew 2:3
We read about King Herod in the history of the birth of Christ Jesus. He was the king of Judaea appointed by the Roman empire. Many fortresses, temples and monuments were erected by him during his rule. Above all, being a prolific builder, he renovated and expanded the temple in Jerusalem in a magnificent way. But all these colossal buildings did not manifest his godliness. Just like any other politician he had established everything to influence and win the trust of the people. We read that the king was troubled when he heard that Jesus was born in Bethlehem. Moreover, all the male children were put to death by him. Why should he get frightened of a little baby? Even if we go by his assumption, it would take twenty years for the child to be crowned. Then why?
If we scrutinize the history of Herod, it is clear that he had lived in constant fear. It was manifested in his murder of one of his wives, his two sons, his mother-in-law and one of his uncles and the list goes on. (Reference www.britannica.com/biography/herod-king-of-Judaea) What is the root cause for all these massacres? He felt insecure and he had the fear of losing his power.
Although Herod was a mighty king living in a palace surrounded by soldiers as body guards, he was always enshrouded in incomprehensible fear. But if we look into the life of David, we can understand his mindset when he was pursued by his own son Absalom. We read in Psalms 3, how David reacted to the situation. He says, “I will not be afraid of ten thousand people who have set against me all around.” He did not stop with that. He says that he was able to lie down and sleep peacefully. On the one hand, Herod was trembling out of fear in the palace but on the other hand, David was fearless and confident in panic situations. How is it!
The secret of David’s fearlessness is revealed in Psalms 3:3. David put his trusted in God alone in his life. So, he felt safe and secure. Our money, position and status cannot make us feel secure and protected in our lives. Hoping that the more we pin our faith in God, the more we feel secure, let us live without unnecessary fear. Those who hoarded money, thinking that it would protect them, are seen tensed in these days in our country. Let us dedicate ourselves to live trusting God during Christmas. Let us live and rest without fear and feel secure!
