The Zeal of the youths
“…the Lord will be zealous for His land, and pity His people.” – Joel 2:18
The Israelites had made themselves a golden calf and worshipped it. So, God’s wrath burned hot against them and he wanted to consume them. Suppose, we are forced to worship a statue or a law is passed compelling everyone to worship idols what will be our stance as children of the living God? Shall we remain zealous for God? or shall reject God due to fear and be one with the world? Let us see the story of a brave trio with uncompromising faith and zeal.
Nebuchadnezzar, the king made an image of gold. It height was 60 cubits and it width was six cubits. He set it up in the plain and commanded everyone to fall down and worship the gold statue. Those who would not fall down and worship should be cast immediately into the midst of a burning fiery furnace. All the people fell down and worshipped the statue as an act of obedience. The three Jewish youths Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-Nega did not worship the idol. They were zealous for God.
They were brought before the king for not paying due regard to king’s order. The king persuaded them to fall down and worship the statue. They answered boldly and firmly to the king saying, “We have no need to answer you in this matter. Our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace and He will deliver us from your hand as well. Even if He won’t, we will neither serve nor worship the gold image.” The king was full of fury. The furnace was heated seven times more and the three youths were bound and cast into the midst of the burning fiery furnace. Everyone could see four men walking in the fire. On seeing the faith and zeal of the trio, God delivered them from fire. The king was astonished and called out to them saying, “Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego the servants of the Most High, come out and come here.” The hair of their heads was not singed and the smell of fire was not on them. God rescued them.
The King bore testimony that there is no other God who can deliver like this. He also made a decree that whoever spoke anything amiss against the Most High would be cut in pieces. The name of the Lord was glorified in Babylon by the faith and zeal of the three youths. They too were promoted to higher positions. If we are zealous for God and pray and minister, India will turn to Jesus. Hallelujah!
