Vanity of vanities
“Take heed and beware of covetousness for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of the thing he possesses.” – Luke 12:15
John McEnroe was an American legendary tennis player and champion. He reached the peak of his fame at the young age. At the age of 24, he became a millionaire. He owned a very big ship too. In a big gathering certain question was put forth to McEnroe. The question was, “Can you say which is more challenging to you in life?” After being quiet for some time, he said, “I face a challenge every day”. All were wondering what could be that challenge. He continued saying, “It is me, only! Do not think I have attained everything just because I am wealthy.”
Jesus tells us to take heed and beware of covetousness. Covetousness is included in the list of sins. Some people misapprehend that they possess wholeness if they have money and property. It takes much time for them to realize the nothingness of it. Actually, when wealth increases, peace of mind decreases and vanishes like a mirage. Then the life ends. Preacher Solomon calls it “vanity”.
Money is necessary for our lives. But money cannot give real contentment to us. “The love of money is the root of evils and covetousness is idolatry” says Apostle Paul. God resists the proud. It is written in Luke 12:15 that “One’s life does not consist in the abundance of things he possesses.” Our life in the world is full of vanity. So, the true satisfactions comes from knowing God’s purpose for our lives and so let us shun or flee covetousness and turn to God and obtain peace and rest. Let us run our race humbly and with endurance to receive it laying hold on eternal life.
