Good works

“Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.” – Matthew 5:16

Sing Sing is a dangerous prison in the world and the wardens would set foot inside the prison walls with fear. When Lewis Lawes became the warden at Sing Sing prison there was a tremendous change. The credit went to his wife Katherine Lawes who was later called the Angel of Sing Sing. She dared to visit the prison regularly with the children. She encouraged the prisoners individually. She cared for them and spent for them and time to listen to each one. A convicted murderer was blind and Katherine taught him how to read Braille. She found a deaf-mute in prison. She went to school to learn how to use sign language to teach him the sign language. Thus, she understood their needs and helped them out and did ministry. When they heard about the sudden death of Katherine in a car accident, they could not bear the grief. A parade of hundreds of criminals walked without a guard to pay their last homage to their beloved Katherine and wept in love for her and showed their devotion. 

In the Bible, we read about Dorcas who lived in the city of Joppa. She did many good things and many acts of kindness. She had helped the windows by making clothes for them. When she died, they washed her body and laid her in a room and sent for Peter. Peter got down on his knees and prayed and asked her to get up. She opened her eyes and sat up. Although she had to make her living by stitching, she was charitable and kind to the others in need. Thus she was well known to everyone in the city and her light shone on them.

In the modern world we are leading a fast pace of life. We hardly find time to know about our neighbors and to exchange pleasantries. Let us bring in changes in our mindset. Let us be inspired by great women like Kathrine and Dorcas. Let us spare some time for others. When we perform good works, we do not preach the gospel because we live and show the love of Christ to them. Many of them will get to know Jesus. The time, money and material spent on them will be returned in the form of souls. Souls won by us are heavenly treasures, aren’t they? Let us accumulate heavenly treasures by winning souls for Christ.
