Forgiveness
“…forgiving one another…as Christ forgave you.” – Colossians 3:13
It was a very busy street. An old woman was walking along the street, carrying a fruit basket. Dinesh, a cheeky lad happened to see her. Just for fun, he deliberately pushed the fruit basket down. The fruits rolled and they were scattered all over. A big crowd gathered around anticipating a big quarrel. But the old lady spoke to Dinesh meekly saying, “Lad, you had pushed the basket accidently. Please do not repeat the same to anyone.” She bent down and began to pick the fruits and put them in the basket. Her soft-spoken word and kind action touched Dinesh. He was filled with remorse and asked for forgiveness. Moreover, he picked the rest of the fruits and helped her in arranging them. The crowd appreciated the forgiving nature of the aged lady.
We may also encounter such situations that arouse our anger and test our patience at home, in the work place and in our day today life. There will be a complete change in the situation, if we do what Jesus would in such a situation without being provoked. The conducive circumstances can be seen when we forgive one another and converse humbly. Job had painful boils from head to foot. Job who accepted the sudden loss of his children and property saying, “The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away. Blessed be the name of the Lord” was wounded and rebuked by his wife and opened his mouth and cursed the day of his own birth. His friends who came to mourn and comfort him ridiculed and mocked at Job. They blamed him and stated that God had punished him less than his iniquity and wickedness he deserved. He was tormented by them. But Job kindly forgave and prayed for his friends although he was hurt deeply by them physically and mentally. Then Job was given twice as much as he had.
Beloved friends, the forgiving nature of granny made Dhinesh regret his wrongdoing. As Job forgave his friends who condemned him, he was given twice as much as he had. It is not so easy to forgive and forget the people who do injustice and speak against us. But forgiving gives way for their transformation and we can also stay in peace. If we are not able to forgive someone and if we keep the enmity in the mind, we cannot live at peace. So, let us ask for God’s strength to be spiritually matured to forgive others. If so, any unfavorable situation can be made sweet and pleasing.
