One thing is needed

“…Whoever exalts himself will be humbled and he who humbles himself will be exalted.” - Luke 14:11

William Carey was an illustrious English missionary who had translated the Bible into many languages of India. He landed in Calcutta at first. He had great influence among men of letters and higher authorities. Once William Carey was invited for a feast with Lord Hastings, then Indian Governor General. William Carey was never ashamed of his family background even after he became famous. A General who was sitting at Lord Hasting’s table asked, “Was not William Carey once a shoe maker?”. William Carey overheard the question and replied humbly saying, “No Sir, not even a shoemaker, only a cobbler”. Look how humble he was! As the proverb says, “Only empty vessel makes more noise”. Being an intelligent person, William Carey was calm and composed and talked when needed. We have nothing to feel proud of as we receive everything from the Lord God. Those who have understood this will certainly clothe themselves with humility.

As Christians we have to follow Christ’s example of humility and model a life of submission. Jesus has given us an example of how to live at all times and in all situations. “Christ Jesus who being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bond servant and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.” (Philippians 2:6-8) Proverb 15:13 says,” Humiliation comes before Honor”. It is also written “God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble” (James 4:6). In the parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector, we find the tax collector going to his house justified as he humbled himself and prayed (Luke 18:10-14)

Beloved we need to be humble to acknowledge ourselves as sinners and plead with God for His Grace. We are not saved through our good works to boast. All our righteous acts are like filthy rags. We are worthless to boast and exalt ourselves. Many a time our social status, position and spiritual gift prevent us from being humble. We may be godly but if we compare ourselves with the other believers and friends and feel proud of being better than them, it is very dangerous. So even if we are blessed with spiritual gifts let us adorn ourselves with meekness. Let us submit ourselves to our Lord Christ Jesus who humbled himself till his death.
