Simplicity

“…Godliness with contentment is great gain.” - 1Timothy 6:6

It was a pleasant evening. The old students had visited their former teacher who was retired. The master gave them a warm welcome. They were exchanging pleasantries. He asked his wife sitting beside him to bring tea and then he whispered something in her ears. Their lively conversation was going on in an interesting way. The students expressed their disappointment and discontentment in their jobs and income. Tea was served in different types of cups. Each one chose the colorful and attractive cup. Only ordinary cups were not chosen by anyone. The master explained to them saying, “Dear students, each one of you selected the very best cup. Do you know that the same tea was poured into all the cups? As you had expected, desired and aspired to acquire the best in everything, you are disappointed and dissatisfied with the ordinary life. With a content heart, try to lead a simple life. Then it will not be a burden to you. You can enjoy a peaceful life.”

In the book of Esther, in the Bible, we read about Mordecai. He was the one who brought up Esther, his uncle’s daughter who lost her parents. He was one of the servants within the king’s gate. Even when Esther was crowned as the queen of one hundred and twenty-seven provinces of the kingdom, Mordecai remained the same as the servant at the king’s gate without showing off himself as Esther’s cousin. This reveals his humble nature. He was exalted because he was simple, humble, godly and full of compassion for his people. He never looked for honor and reward from the king for saving him.

Beloved God’s children, are we discontent in our life? Do we feel bitter? Are we fed up? “We know that all things work together for good to those who love God.” Moreover, we read that “Blessed are the poor in spirit.” God is able to raise the poor from the dust and set them among princes. Do we possess Mordecai’s simplicity and humility? God regards the lowly and exalts them. It is certain that we shall be lifted up and honored. Hallelujah.
