Gossiping

 

“Where there is no wood, the fire goes out; and where there is no tale bearer, strife ceases” - Proverbs 26:20

 

In our household, midst of relatives, work place it is common for some quarrels regarding political issues. The main reason for this is gossiping. 

 

To escape from gossiping, philosopher Socrates gave an advice. His student told him "I heard news about your friend". Socrates said, "did you filter it three times before telling it to me?” Are you wondering about that filter? " 

 

1. Is it 100% true?

 

2. Is it good news? 

 

3. Is it useful for anyone? Are the three filters. 

 

He said "no" to the three questions. Socrates replied, "why should a good for nothing and not good news told to me?" That student was silently thinking. 

 

Gossiping might not look like a big sin, but its consequences are worse in the society. God ordered about this to Moses "Thou shalt not go up and down as a talebearer among thy people: neither shalt thou stand against the blood of thy neighbor; Iam lord." (Leviticus 19:16). Solomon says 

"A forward man soweth strife: and a whisperer seperateth chief of friends" (Proverbs 16:28). “The words of a talebearer are as wounds, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly" (Proverbs 26:22). "Where no wood is, there the fight goes out: so where there is no talebearer, the strife ceases" (Proverbs 26:20) Paul writes to the church of Corinth "For I fear, lest, when I come, I shall not find you such as I would, and that I shall be found unto you such as ye would not: lest there be debates, envying, wraths, strives, backbiting, whispering, swelling, tumults." (2 Corinthians12:20, 21) 

 

My dear! Think whether you have gossiping habit or not. Let us be God fearing and be aware that God is listening to this. Let the advice of Socrates help us.
