Fruit bearing life

 

"…A tree is identified by its fruit" - Matthew 12:33

 

When Jesus Christ returned from Bethany after his ministry, he was hungry. When he sees a fig tree in the distance, which seemed to be prosperous. He rushes closer to eat its fruits and satisfy his hunger. It was’t figs fruit season, so there was no fruit but only leaves. Jesus curses it when it is barren. Is it fair? A question may arise in our hearts. Is it the fig tree's fault for not bearing fruit when its not in season? As we can think. There could have been many reasons why Jesus cursed the fig tree. But there is a reason why this incident is recorded in the Bible. This is to warn us.

 

Spring is the best time for fig trees to bear fruit. Days other than spring are unfavourable days for the fig tree to bear fruit. Let us compare this parable with our practical life. Spring is the time when all the circumstances of our life are favourable and we live with unabated happiness. In times like this we will praise God with joy. We will pity the poor. It becomes a time for us to give fruits like love, happiness, peace, kindness and goodness to others. But when the circumstances of our lives are unfavourable, such as struggle, setbacks, restlessness, times of declining faith, days of vain accusations, etc., the days are not spring. How is our action seen in such times? Do we bear the fruit of patience and meekness even in the face of false accusations? Are we at peace trusting God even when everything is against us? If we ask ourselves these questions, the answer is "no".

 

What is God's expectation? It is to bear fruit not only in favourable circumstances of life but also in adverse circumstances. Friends! We should not allow trials to make us unfruitful as we trust in God and walk with him. Whether we have enough or not, we must not lose the image that "we are children of God" under all circumstances. Let's pray and try. God will lend a hand and help.
