Be content
“Now godliness with contentment is great gain.” – 1Timothy 6:6
A certain king was ruling his kingdom honestly and justly. He had a clever minister who gave him wise counsel in important matters. So, the king gave weight to his timely counsel and reined his country prudently.
That minister had a brother who was a farmer. He was an illiterate but he was covetous. One day he said to his brother, “You have been thriving as a minister for years. But I am working hard in my field. I wish I were a minister in your place at least for three days.” The minister shared the desire of his brother with the king and made a request. The king had no other way but to agree to his request. The next day the farmer came to the palace in the guise of a minister.
The king told the new minister that he could hear the sounds of vehicles. The new minister could not understand what the king expected from him. He just went out and had a look at the vehicles and said that it was the sound of the vehicles. So, the king asked him about the number of vehicles, the load carried by them and the details of the sender. The farmer in the guise of the minister said to the king “How can I answer, if you put forth too many questions at a time?” The palace was quiet because the new minister was questioning the king. The king was annoyed. Fortunately, his brother entered just in time and was ready with the answer. He gave a detailed account saying “There are 38 vehicles sent by the king of the neighboring country and each one was loaded with 10 bags so as to make a total of 380 bags.” This answer satisfied the king and his anger was lightened.
The Minister in guise pondered. He himself admitted saying, “I don’t want to be a minister. Give the position to my wise brother who deserves it. Only farming is suitable for my nature. Now I have learnt to be content in whatever state I am; I will not desire more than I deserve. I apologize for disturbing you all.” His brother sent him off to his field with pride.
Dear lads and lasses, greed brings only grief and ruin. Whatever we possess-parents, house, food, clothes, cell phone - are given to us by Jesus. We should never feel discontented with what we own and envious of what others have. Our heavenly father will be delighted if we thank Him and enjoy the blessings He has showered. Let us live with contentment.
