Shunem

 

"He who receives a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet's reward…” - Mat. 10:41

 

Shunem - This is not the lady's name. The name of the town where she lived! When the prophet Elisha went to that place, she repentantly asked him to come to her house and have a meal. Whenever he travelled, she received him with love. Not only that, she built a comfortable room for him to stay in and provided him with all the things he needed. Her loving care, hospitality, and kindness made Eliza to think to do some good for her. "What should I do for you, you are interrogating us with all the fuss? Is there anything I can do for you in the king's place?" he asked. But she did not reveal that she had no children but said, "I am living comfortably among my people." Yes, it can be understood that she is not expecting any kind of reciprocation.

 

She gives birth to a son when Prophet blesses her, after learning about the matter through Gehazi. When the son grew up, one day he fell ill and died. Although it deeply affected her heart, she did not panic and did not even tell her husband about this. She laid her son on the bed in Elisha's living room and went to the servant of God in Carmel and took hold of his feet and told him about her condition. When he said that he would send his servant, she was adamant that he should come. She believed and got her son back. Although she is seen as a woman whose name is not mentioned in the scriptures and a woman who is not preached much by the preachers, we can say that she is an example for all of us in serving, honoring the children of God, and firmly believing.

 

Beloved ones! We may not have the opportunity to serve. But let's welcome God's servants who come to our town like Shunemi with love and treat them! We see in the above verse that the scriptures say that those who accept a prophet in the name of a prophet have the fruit of a prophet. Yes, when we do good without expecting anything in return like Shunammite, there is no doubt that God will reward us accordingly
