Tongue and Evil 

 

"So He will make them stumble over their own tongue; All who see them shall flee away” - Psalm 64:8

 

A king named Vijayavarman was ruling the country called Vijayapuri. In his court there was a dwarf minister named Mahipalan. Once the king sent him as an ambassador to a neighbouring country. Minister Mahipalan, who came as an envoy to that country, was mocked and spoke sarcastically because he was a dwarf, by the king.

 

He asked, "Isn't there someone better than you in your country?" This made the minister very sad. Immediately he said, "O king, our country has a custom. According to that custom, the king has sent me here as a messenger. "What is the custom of your country?" he asked. The minister said, "It is the custom of our king to send ambassadors according to the nature of each country. If the king is wise our king sends wise ambassadors to a ruling country, and if the king is foolish our king sends a fool to a ruling country. I am the biggest fool in our country. That is why he sent me here." Hearing this, the king bowed his head in shame.

 

Yes, beloved in Christ! Are we careful with our speech even today? Are our words used to offend and hurt others? Let's think about it.

 

Psalm 140:11 says, " Let not an evil speaker be established in the earth: evil shall hunt the violent man to overthrow him."

 

Even in the scriptures there was a man who hurt others with his tongue. His name is Nabal. David sends 10 young men to Nabal. David was once a helper to Nabal.

 

But Nabal sent them away insultingly and asking, "Who is David? There are many here who have run away from their master." This makes David angry and he took Nabal as hostile. We read in today's scripture that he brought danger to himself by his unkind speech. We also should learn to speak kind words when we talk to others. Let us not speak to offend others. Amen!
